3 Ways to Avoid Heat Pump Problems

3 Ways to Avoid Heat Pump Problems

Call HVAC Technician

One of the product upgrade benefits of a heat pump is its energy efficiency. Instead of using natural gas or propane to provide heat, it uses refrigerant. While energy efficient, heat pumps do have their drawbacks, including some common problems associated with them. The following list provides ways to avoid these problems:

#1 Have a Regular Maintenance Visit for Your Heat Pump

Getting regular maintenance for your HVAC system is one of the best ways to avoid problems. With routine maintenance, you can identify small problems before they become major issues. This means you save money by fixing the small problem. Additionally, the regular maintenance can avoid some problems altogether.

#2 Check for Ice Build-up

A little coating of frost or ice on the outside portion of the heat pump unit is normal. What’s not normal is if any part of the outdoor heat pump unit has a heavy coating of ice, or there is a thick sheet of ice on any of the components.

This is a problem because the ice stops the transfer of heat between the refrigerant and the outside air. Assuming your heat pump still works, it won’t work very effectively. If the ice remains there, it can lead to a compressor failure.

#3 Install a Furnace Along with the Heat Pump

Heat Pumps don’t work very well when it gets too cold outside. When the outside temperature drops below freezing, the heat pump won’t effectively warm up your home or office. To avoid a continually running heat pump when it gets near freezing, consider running a conventional furnace to create a hybrid system. The furnace will do a much better job providing warmth when it’s really cold outside.
