#2 Check for Ice Build-up
A little coating of frost or ice on the outside portion of the heat pump unit is normal. What’s not normal is if any part of the outdoor heat pump unit has a heavy coating of ice, or there is a thick sheet of ice on any of the components.
This is a problem because the ice stops the transfer of heat between the refrigerant and the outside air. Assuming your heat pump still works, it won’t work very effectively. If the ice remains there, it can lead to a compressor failure.
#3 Install a Furnace Along with the Heat Pump
Heat Pumps don’t work very well when it gets too cold outside. When the outside temperature drops below freezing, the heat pump won’t effectively warm up your home or office.
