3 HVAC Dealer Mistakes You Don’t Want to Make

Customer Service

There are a variety of benefits to becoming a McCall’s dealer. Not only do you get exceptional service and a reliable supply of products, but you can also avoid making some of these common HVAC dealer mistakes.

Mistake #1: Complacency

If business is good and your current way of running things works, it’s easy to let complacency creep into your business strategy. After all, the saying, “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” exists for a reason. But if you’re not careful, you can provide an opportunity for competitors to take business away from you.

To avoid complacency, you should always look for new ways to operate and market to new customers. Maybe it’s a change in the way you advertise using social media. Or perhaps it’s doing some research on industry trends and adjusting your business strategy to match. Whatever you do, do something.

Mistake #2: Focusing on Short-Term Gains

Too often businesses will create incentives for employees such that it encourages them to sacrifice long-term goals for a short-term gain. If salespeople receive bonuses on the number of sales made or the size of the deal, that could pose a problem. That’s because it doesn’t take into account the cost to the business of each sale.

For example, if a salesperson sells ten units for $1,000, but the profit to the business is $30 per unit, the bonus must relate to the $30 value, not the $1,000 value. Otherwise, salespeople will drop prices so low that they still get their bonuses due to the number of sales made, but the business actually loses money.

Mistake #3: Selling a Bad Product

It might be tempting to push a product that provides for high margins or seems like it will sell well. But you need to make sure it’s a quality product that meets or exceeds your customers’ expectations. If not, you will have unhappy customers and likely lose the customers forever due to your damaged reputation.
