How Frequently Should I Actually Be Changing My Air Filters?
When to change air filters is one of the most common general HVAC service questions. Get the answer here.
One of the most frequently asked general HVAC service questions is, “how often should I be changing the air filters on my system?” Unfortunately, the most common answer to that question is, “it depends.”
Multiple Factors Influence the Life of the Air Filter
Based on average use, you can expect to replace small, inexpensive fiberglass filters monthly. More expensive, pleated type filters may last up to six months.
But other factors contribute as well. The size of your home affects the use of the HVAC system. A more compact home doesn’t require as much use of the HVAC system so filters will last longer. Also, consider the size of the HVAC unit itself. A smaller system may have a smaller filter that needs more frequent changing.
Are there animals in the house? Adding a cat or dog shortens the life of the filter, as does every additional pet. Pet hair and dander can quickly clog an air filter.
Know What to Look For
Homeowners can easily change the air filters in their HVAC systems. It’s a quick job that can save lots of money and wear and tear on the system.
Examine the air filter monthly. If you can still see the pattern of the filter fabric beneath a thin layer of dust/dirt, it is working fine. However, if the dust/dirt is so thick that you can’t see the pattern, then it is past time for a change.
