Discover the EPA's Updated Refrigerant Management Requirements
Ozone depleting substances (ODS) such as refrigerant are considered a substantial factor in the depletion of the ozone and contributor to global warming. In an effort to reduce these emissions the EPA began issuing guidelines to deter improper handling of ODS substances in 1993 with their "no-venting rule."
In the newest edition of Section 608 of the Clean Air Act the EPA pushes for improved record-keeping and prevents persons that are not certified technicians from purchasing HFC refrigerant. Although many changes took place in January of 2017 there are several changes to prepare for that begin in 2018.
Each of these regulations are designed to monitor leaks and repairs of large appliances that use refrigerant in an effort to reduce the amount of ozone depleting substances that are disposed of incorrectly. The EPA has calculated that the implementation of these updated regulations will have an impact comparable to taking 1.5 million cars off the road annually.
